The shoulder can hurt because of a problem in the joint or because a neck problem is referring pain to the area. The pain can be coming from injury or damage to the local muscles (the rotator cuff) the ligaments or capsule surrounding the joint or other structures within the joint. Often shoulder problems are related to the way in which the shoulder is controlled by your muscles as it moves. Less than perfect posture and movement can sometimes damage the local structures. Frozen shoulder is a condition where the ligaments surrounding the shoulder become so irritated they become painfully tight.
